Other Programs

Section 8

The Public Housing Authority of Butte has about 100 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers.

In the Section 8 Program, participants must not exceed the income guidelines set by HUD and they must have criminal background checks.  The Section 8 participants rent units in the private market.  They can rent houses, apartments, or mobile homes.  The units are inspected before a participant can move into the unit and the units are inspected annually thereafter.

Participants pay 30% of their monthly adjusted income for rent and utilities.  The Public Housing Authority of Butte pays the remainder of the rent directly to the landlords each month.

Shelter + Care

The Public Housing Authority of Butte has received funding for about 20 participants for the Shelter + Care program.

Shelter + Care is very similar to the Section 8 program.  However, participants in the Shelter + Care program must be homeless and have case management services at the time they are admitted to the Shelter + Care program.

Since case management is a required component of this program, most of the Shelter + Care participants are clients of Western Montana Mental Health.  After being admitted to the Shelter + Care program, the participants find their own housing in the private market and follow the same rules as in the Section 8 program.
